Japan– A new gable top packaging container for cereal products from Chokoku Plast Corporation,Japan, aims to provide consumers with maximum open-close convenience while ensuring product protection.The Chokoku Plast Hybrid Box is a composite container of paper and heat-sealed plastic barrier film. Ideal for cereal products, this new packaging innovation eliminates the need for two separate packaging components usually found in bag-in-box applications; a plastic pack and paper carton.According to Munehiro Kameda, assistant manager of the company’s Tokyo branch office, “With conventional cereal boxes, it is a little more inconvenient for consumers because they have to remove the plastic pack containing the cereal from the box first, in order to pour out the cereal. The consumer then has to try to insert the plastic pack back into the box. Also, because the shape of the plastic pack containing the cereal has now changed because it has been opened and the contents shifted, it causes the bag to budge at the sides.”With the Hybrid Box, a part of the heat-sealed film is extended out of the composite box top, so consumers can easily tear out this top film-strip to open the package. “As the outer carton and inner plastic film are laminated together, the opening portion can be easily pulled out of the triangle in the gable top form,” said Kameda. “The triangle area is pushed back for easy reclosing. The inner film’s oxygen barrier properties provide additional protection in keeping the cereal fresh.”One special feature of the Hybrid Box is its lack of a carton bottom. This creates a space secured between the bottom of the inner plastic bag and the surface on which the package stands. This uses the air in the void space to cushion and protect the package from any exterior shock effects.Available in both rectangular and square base shapes, the Hybrid Box was introduced by Chokoku Plast in September and is currently patent-pending. The company says because the composition of the inner plastic film can be varied according to the customer’s need, the Hybrid Box can also be used for snack foods and pet foods.

Japan - Toppan Printing Co Ltd has developed a new paper-based high barrier Eco Flat Cup which can be used for alcoholic beverages that require high temperature filling. Compared to other similar containers, the Eco Flat Cup does not deform when hot-filled due its improved dome-shaped lid that can absorb the contraction of air and deformations inside the container caused by changes in the temperature and pressure reduction.The product can then be allowed to cool and be distributed at room temperature, or below, with no adverse effect on the package structure. Suitable for high temperature filling, this cup can be used in a wide range of alcoholic drinks requiring high temperature sterilization during filling, such as Japanese sake, shochu and wines.In addition, because the consumer can completely remove the lid for drinking, the Eco Flat Cup is also suitable for drinks where aroma is an important part of the consumer experience, such as brandy or whisky.The entire cup is covered with Toppan’s clear high barrier GL film and by utilizing form processing technology the company was also able to prevent any unevenness of the seal section, improving sealability.These packaging features help reduce oxygen permeation rate and the resultant deterioration of contents, enabling longer periods of storage and longer shelf life for the packaged products.The Eco Flat Cup not only makes product consumption more convenient; its easy-open sealant lid film as well as the reduction of paper fluff on the flange section after the lid is opened also makes for a more enjoyable drinking experience.Kizakura Co Ltd is the first company to use the Eco Flat Cup for two of its Japanese sake products – “Kizakura Karakuchi Ikkon” and “Kizakura Junmai Karakuchi Ikkon” – launched in September 2012. Toppan Printing is targeting annual sales of US$38.2 million (¥3 billion) for this product and related orders by 2015.

Latin America – Last October, the City of Light (Paris) received the top packaging designers of the world to celebrate their best creations. Artists from Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Brazil and Peru were among them. All of these countries won at least one of the Pentawards, with Peru being the main highlight among Latin Americans competitors. The competition involved 1,200 designs from 27 countries.The Peruvian entrant Infinito received a Gold Pentaward for its design for coffee brand 338. The agency has more than 35 employees and is specialized in food and beverage design strategies. According to the team responsible for the design, the process of developing the design crossed the acknowledge of the coffee production in the country – the frist producer of organic coffee in the world.Colombia took part of the Pentawards for the first time and won the Silver prize in the pet category, with Pino Minino, a paperboard box 100% biodegradable made of pine to replace the cat litter. Mexican Cadena + Asociados also received a Silver award for its work with Cielito Querido Café. Piano & Piano, a Chilean agency, won a Silver award for its RIP Vino design, as the wines also gave Mexican Factor Tres a Silver award. Brazil’s Casa Rex received a prize for its design for Brigaderia, a candy store.
